The War Memorial Institute, known to many as ‘the Institute’ or ‘WMI’, was built in 1920 and serves as Stathern’s village hall - the Little hall with a Big heart - commemorating the service men and women from the village who served and died in two World Wars.
The hall has a sprung wooden floor, with a well-equipped kitchen and small changing room to one side. The grassed area with picnic benches at the front of the building provides a suitably sociable central spot where villagers often catch up and consume tasty offerings from the Coffee Shot cafe next door.
The WMI's weekly classes include Belvoir Dance, Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, Line Dancing, Art Class and a parent and toddler Playgroup session. And the popular monthly Crafternoon, Lunch Clubs and Afternoon Teas with a Classic Film help to bring villagers together, helping to reduce the risk of isolation … 'feeding friendships, old and new'.
If you would like to make a booking, please click on the 'How to Book' tab to find out how and then go to the 'Calendar' tab to make a provisional booking.
The WMI is run as a registered charity (RCN 519063) by a committee of volunteer Managing Trustees comprising a small group of village residents. They help to ensure via hire income and fundraising events, that there is sufficient revenue generated to meet the annual running costs, develop opportunities to support the village and keep up with maintenance and improvements to the 100-year-old building*. Stathern's community groups - St Guthlac's Church, Stathern Gardening Club, Stathern Women's Institute, Friends of Stathern School, Hose & Harby British Legion and Stathern Parish Council, hire the WMI when available for meetings and events. Ad-hoc hirers for birthday parties, meetings and training sessions make up other bookings through the year. The events and activities in turn are supported by a larger group of volunteers from the village who are passionate about keeping the WMI vibrant and at the heart of Stathern.
